Stop. Breath. Look to God.

I turned the corner in the now familiar hallway and made my way closer to the small room that had become a daily part of my routine over the last week and a half. As I prepared to cross the threshold, I stopped and took a deep breath. Yesterday’s visit to my father’s hospice room was heartbreaking as I saw my beloved Dad in pain and his body giving up on him, one labored breath at a time. “God give me the strength,” I prayed as I walked in and turned to his bed not knowing what I would find.

"Oh…hi, honey", he said with a gentle smile on his face.

"I’m just sitting here spending time with the Lord."

His face was almost glowing, no longer pinched in pain, but illuminated in peace. I breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank you, Jesus!” I thought to myself. Through all the pain and the failing of his body, my father rested his heart and soul in the arms of his loving, heavenly Father and found peace and joy in that moment. Approximately a week later he went home to heaven.

Since then I have faced piercing grief and moments of feeling overwhelmed, but when I remember the look of thankful peace on my father’s face that day in the hospice room, I must remember to do what he did:

Stop. Breathe. Look to God.

This life will bring moments that are simply too heartbreaking, scary or overwhelming to face on your own. When this happens, remember that you are not alone and you were never meant to face the hardships of life on your own.

“Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens.” Psalm 68:19

Indeed you have a loving Savior in Jesus Christ who will never abandon you and walks with you, every step of the way. In times of grief and hardship, open your arms to receive the embrace of the One who loves you eternally. All you need to do is…

Stop. Breathe. Look to God.
